About My Blog – Things to do in Atlanta and Beyond

If you are looking for a blog that entices you with pictures and stories of the many intriguing and beautiful places to visit and things to do in Atlanta and beyond– this blog is for you.  I hope to inspire you to get out and explore the world and give you many wonderful options to choose from.

collage - places to visit

This is my very first blog post.  So… I guess I’ll tell you about myself and why I’ve decided to start a blog.   I am a photographer who loves to travel and am a bit obsessed with taking photos.  I have always seen my life through pictures.  I gain so much joy when I capture a beautiful moment on “film” and then look back on it later and am right back in that place and time.   I am hoping to capture the amazing places of the world in pictures and stories and inspire my readers to get out and explore– starting with things to do in Atlanta and the Atlanta area.  I will also be adding simple photography tips at the end of each post to help you improve your photos.

On My Way with my fake animal skin suitcase…tacky I know, but easy to spot at the airport.

Getting out and exploring is a great way to connect with the people we love.  I hope to introduce you to some places where you can nurture your relationships with family and friends.  A special trip with your husband, a hike to enjoy with your kids, a museum to visit with your in-laws, a picnic in a beautiful park with a friend who needs cheering up.  An outing can also be an enjoyable way to get some exercise and fresh air and reconnect with nature – there are so many terrific places to take a walk or hike in and around Atlanta.

Sunset at Piedmont Park

Incredible sunset at Piedmont Park after we waited out a torrential downpour – the light can be so beautiful after rain.

My romantic getaway with my husband to Chateau Elan – fun to see someone else behind my camera.

Hike with my youngest son at Sope Creek – the cool weather and warm colors make fall my favorite time of the year to hike

Hike at Indian Seats with my sons and a friend -when you have boys it’s never a real hike unless a stick is involved.

Swan House with family

It has always fascinated me that many people don’t really explore the area where they live.  They go on trips to wonderful places at great expense without realizing what they could have seen or done right at home.   I was actually guilty of this when I was growing up in Louisiana.  I plan to get back there soon to discover some of what I missed.  When I moved to Georgia two years ago, I was amazed at all of the things to do in Atlanta.  I started exploring right away and can’t wait to continue exploring this wonderful area and share it with you.  I intend to focus on exploring the Atlanta area and weekend getaways near Atlanta first.

My youngest son at Gibbs Garden in the fall – I did not saturate the colors – they were really this vivid!

Poole's Mill Covered Bridge

My oldest son at Poole’s Mill Covered Bridge- love the way the bridge “frames” him in this photo.

I also plan to explore more of the United States, and one day hopefully have more international travels.  I have one son in college and two more who will be leaving the house soon.  Since college is so expensive these days, I need to travel economically.  Staying close to home helps with that- and like I said there are so many awesome adventures right here in Atlanta.  Before they fly the coupe, I hope to enjoy spending some quality time with my two boys who are still home.  I plan to have some fun experiences to share with you to try with your own kids.  I will also share wonderful places to visit and things to do with your husband or friends.  I have to admit that I do love to go more than the rest of my family and friends, and so if nobody is game I do go ahead and go alone and enjoy some solitude and soul searching.

Castle Combe, England

Castle Combe, England – what luck that this lovely young lady rode down the street on her horse.

So… I admit it’s a bit ironic, but I’ll be using social media (a blog) to get people off of social media for awhile to experience the world around them.  It seems with all the ways to entertain ourselves on social media out there I think more and more people are staying home and not getting out and seeing the world.  I know I am guilty of sometimes binge watching Downton Abby or House of Cards.  I admit sometimes it’s awesome to just chill out and unwind at home.  But I hope my stories will be enough to get you to turn it off for awhile.  It also seems changes in the way families are entertained are causing more time alone and not with the ones we love.  I know this is true in my home.  My husband watches his horror show in one room, while I watch my chick flicks in another, and the kids are in different areas playing music or video games.   I hope to inspire you to get out together and experience the wonderful places and events going on all around us.
